Dating back to the 2024/25 season, many fans of the Calgary Flames have expected the team to deal Blake Coleman, but thus far, he's stuck around, surprisingly making it through the 2026 trade deadline without being moved.
However, given the Flames are looking to give the youth opportunities at the NHL level, and just one day after the beginning of free agency, the team have officially parted ways with the veteran winger. Early on Thursday, it was first reported by Darren Dreger that the Flames are trading Blake Coleman to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for veteran Jake Middleton.

On top of the two players going to Minnesota, Calgary are using one of their recently freed up retention slots to retain 50% of the final year of Coleman's deal, which will play a significant factor in the overall return for the Flames. According to Emily Kaplan, one of those picks will be a second, with the team taking on three picks as a part of the trade.
