The Calgary Flames are riding their hottest streak in recent years, as they come into the first Battle of Alberta on Wednesday night of the season with four straight victories.

Not only that, but they're 5-1-0 in their last five games, and in that stretch, the team have beaten the Anaheim Ducks, Carolina Hurricanes, Minnesota Wild, Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs, setting this up to be an incredibly exciting BoA.

That's put plenty of chatter about the future and potential trades on hold for now, but according to one of the NHL's top insiders, the Flames have begun discussions with a pending free agent about an extension with the organization.

That player would be Morgan Frost, and coming into the 2026/27 season, many saw him as the Flames top trade chip alongside Zach Whitecloud, especially given the lack of center's that will be available at the trade deadline.

However, given the Flames lack of center depth, there's always been an expectation that the team could keep him beyond 2026/27, despite the fact that he's a free agent following this season. Now, TSN's Pierre LeBrun has confirmed that extension talks between the two parties have officially begun, with a mutual interest between them in getting a deal done.

"Darren Ferris and Craig Conroy had their preliminary discussion on Monday... There is mutual interest to try to get an extension done at some point this year."

In recent times, Joel Farabee at 26-years-old has established himself as a key piece of the Flames future and a replacement for Blake Coleman as a leader, and at 27, Frost is a similar age and could give this team depth in the long-term.

However, Farabee is already under contract for next year as well, with Frost needing a new deal now, and given that Cole Reschny is the teams only top level center prospect, keeping Frost around alongside Mikael Backlund for depth makes sense. On paper, a 2-3 combo of Reschny/Frost with a star on the first line could make this team a tough one to play against, but clearly, Frost hasn't produced enough yet for the Flames to offer him a big money deal, even with a rising salary cap.

Ultimately, this one comes down to how much it would cost to keep Frost long-term, and while an extension makes sense for 3-5 years on a relatively low AAV, if the asking price is the full term at seven years and upwards of $7 million per season, the Flames would be better off trying to get a significant return for him at the trade deadline.
