The 2026 NHL Draft is less than two weeks old, and while the future begins to look brighter for the Calgary Flames following a deep, talented draft class, for the scouting department, the march to 2027 begins immediately.
While the 2026/27 season is still a few months away, the belief is that this Flames team with very limited skill and few standout players will struggle through the year, and with lottery luck, they have the opportunity to land the No. 1 pick for the first time in history. Lottery luck has never been on the Flames side, but with the rebuild well and truly on, no time in history have Calgary had a better chance than now to land that No. 1 pick.
In The Athletic's very early 2027 Mock Draft, that's exactly what happens, and while the team are looking for their 1C of the future, it's no surprise that Calgary are selecting hometown star Landon DuPont, who profiles as one of the best young defenseman the draft has ever seen.

DuPont is headed to Michigan for the coming season after a two-year career with the Everett Silvertips in the WHL, where he combined for 35 goals and 133 points across 127 games despite still being just 17-years-old. Given his stature at 5-foot-11 and 185 pounds with another year of growth ahead, DuPont has everything needed to be a star at the NHL level, and while one can question adding another blue liner to the future in the draft, it's easy to see why Calgary would love to add him if they landed that No. 1 pick.
He's not the only WHL star that Calgary add in Pronman's mock draft however, as the Flames also land the No. 29 overall pick as a result of the Rasmus Andersson trade, and in that spot, they take Seattle Thunderbirds star winger Brock England, who had a standout campaign in the WHL this past year with 21 goals and 51 points in 64 games as a 16-year-old.
The Red Deer native has plenty of size at 5-foot-11, 160 pounds already, and while the Flames don't land a 1C in a centre heavy draft, these are two players with very high ceilings at the NHL level.
