The youth movement is well and truly underway with the Calgary Flames, and after an 0-3-0 and -13 start to the 2026/27 season, the front office have already made some very intriguing changes.
The first of which was placing Connor Zary and Brayden Pachal on waivers, and after both passed through and were re-assigned to the American Hockey League, the team had some moves to make. Those became official on Wednesday, as the team promoted two young forwards, and ahead of their clash with the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday night, the Flames are set to hand one of those two players his NHL debut.
Jonathan Castagna in Line to Make his Calgary Flames Debut
That player would be former third-round pick Jonathan Castagna, a player acquired in the Mackenzie Weegar trade at the 2026 trade deadline alongside three second-round picks and defenseman Olli Maatta. In 2025/26, he won Defensive Forward of the Year of the ECAC at Cornell while posting an impressive 15 goals and 34 points in 34 games played.
Given his frame at 6-foot-1, 185 pounds and the two-way game, he was seen as a perfect fit in the Flames middle-six, and in his AHL debut with the Wranglers last week, he tallied two goals. In two Wranglers games, Castagna posted a +3 differential to go along with those two goals, and now, it's all but been confirmed that he will make his NHL debut on Thursday.

Jonathan Castagna to Centre the Calgary Flames Fourth-Line
Unsurprisingly, not only Castagna, but Aydar Suniev too will be in the fourth line, with Pat Steinberg confirming that the young duo will play alongside Adam Klapka as the lineup gets another major shakeup.

While many believed Castagna would get an extended run in the AHL before a promotion, it's clear that the bottom-six has struggled, and with Martin Pospisil moving to the third line, the duo of young forwards will fit in perfectly with Maxim Tsyplakov and Brennan Othmann being healthy scratches.
Ultimately, Castagna's success or failure at the NHL level early in the year will depend on how much time this line is given on the ice, and if the two can continue their chemistry, this could end up being one of the most exciting lines on the Flames moving forward.
