This past season, there was plenty of roster turnover for the Calgary Flames, with the team parting ways with three key veterans in Mackenzie Weegar, Nazem Kadri and Rasmus Andersson, all in separate trades.
While they got younger and added future assets in those deals, the Flames also brought in several veterans as replacements, and among all of them, no one fit in quite as well as quickly as former Vegas Golden Knight Zach Whitecloud. In 31 games played with the Flames, the 29-year old upped his offensive production, tallying 10 assists and a +2 differential for a team that struggled mightily throughout the year.
Whitecloud's game has always been at the defensive end, and whether he was paired with Kevin Bahl, Zayne Parekh or anyone else, he continually brought it at both ends of the ice. Now, the veteran has been rewarded, as Team Canada have officially selected him to their roster ahead of the 2026 IIHF World Championships, set to begin next week in Switzerland.

Whitecloud officially joins Olli Maatta, Matt Coronato, Martin Pospisil, Adam Klapka and Devin Cooley to represent their country at the tournament, with the Flames having some key pieces on the international stage despite their poor roster.
At 29-years of age, it's unclear what Whitecloud's future with Calgary will be, but given his performances early in his first season and the reward of playing for Team Canada, he's going to be very valuable to the team, whether that's as a trade piece or as a veteran to build a young defensive core around.
