Over the past two years, the Calgary Flames have been one of the most active teams in the National Hockey League, with General Manager Craig Conroy transforming the future of the franchise. In the early years of his tenure, Conroy has dealt Elias Lindholm, Chris Tanev, Nikita Zadorov, Noah Hanifin, Nazem Kadri, Rasmus Andersson and Mackenzie Weegar, and with the addition of some young prospects and draft capital, things are looking up in Calgary.

As of right now, the team have players like Zayne Parekh, Hunter Brzustewicz and Matvei Gridin in the NHL lineup, but with the team still years away from truly competing, their focus remains the future. That could mean a very active summer, and with several veterans on this roster, we could be looking at a very different lineup come Game 1 of the 2026/27 season.

Now, the DFO Rundown crew have reported that the San Jose Sharks will be looking to beef up their D-core in the summer, providing the outline that Mike Grier will be looking for a controllable player in their mid-20's.

As it just so happens, the Flames have a player exactly like that in Zach Whitecloud, whom they received in the trade with the Vegas Golden Knights that sent Andersson to the Pacific Division rivals. Given that deal, the Flames have shown a willingness to do business with a division foe, and given that Whitecloud is just 29-years of age and under contract for two more years at $2.7 million per season, he may be a great fit.

Sure, he's older than mid-20's, but given the impact he's had in Calgary already in an increased role, he could be a perfect fit for the Sharks blue line that has three ageing veterans on the right side. As for a potential return, this is a Sharks team with some young, controllable assets and future picks, and while it would take a massive offer for the Flames to part ways with Whitecloud (something fans thought would happen at the deadline), it's a possibility.

Since arriving in Calgary, Whitecloud has been stellar, posting 8 assists in 30 games played while chewing up top-pairing minutes, and with a +0 differential on the 29th worst team in the NHL, he's shown his value to a team. It's unclear just how much the Flames would need to part with veterans like Whitecloud, Blake Coleman, Olli Maatta and Ryan Strome this summer, but if the Sharks need an upgrade, the Flames make great sense as a trade partner.
