No. 36 overall: Original Selection - G Tobias Trejbal

Then comes the worst pick of the mock draft from The Athletic, as they go with a goaltender early in the second round, despite having Dustin Wolf and Devin Cooley at the NHL level, along with Owen Say, Arsenii Sergeev, Kirill Zarubin and Yegor Yegorov all in the system.

That is, of course, no knock on Tobias Trejbal, as he dominated the USHL a year ago, posting a .916 save percentage along with a 2.12 GAA, and comes into the draft as the best available goaltender. At 6-foot-4, Trejbal has everything a team could want in a goaltender, and if he was available later in the second round or even the third, the Flames could take the shot, but with much more pressing needs, it's a pick that simply doesn't make too much sense for the Flames.

Revised No. 36 Selection: LHD Ben MacBeath

For months now, this has been a fan favourite selection for the Calgary Flames for many reasons. Not only does MacBeath have great size at 6-foot-2, 188 pounds, but he's also a native of Calgary that spent last season with the WHL's Calgary Hitmen, showing off immense upside in the process.

In 67 games of his first WHL season, MacBeath tallied 7 goals and 51 points, and while he's still young, the upside is there, as he has great mobility and is a great two-way player with consistency, something that will serve him well in the NHL. Sure, there's a chance that Trejbal becomes much more than MacBeath in the NHL, but as the draft goes on, teams need to pick for positional need, and given the links to Calgary and the obvious upside, to pass on MacBeath (who The Athletic picked No. 37 overall) would be a poor miss for Craig Conroy and the Flames.
