The Calgary Flames front office made some necessary trades

For years now, the biggest worry of loyal, dedicated, long-time Flames fans has been the front office, with their overwhelming desire to compete for a simply playoff berth year after year leading them to questionable decisions. Then, Craig Conroy took over as General Manager, and since then, while he's not been perfect, the franchise has clearly been heading in the right direction, and that continued in 2025/26.
While the team all but had to trade Rasmus Andersson as a pending free agent, they weren't forced to make any other decisions, but that didn't stop them from moving star veterans Nazem Kadri and Mackenzie Weegar. In the three deals, the Flames landed two first-round picks, five second-round picks as well as prospects like Abram Wiebe, Max Curran and Jonathan Castagna. Sure, they also took back veterans Ryan Strome, Victor Olofsson, Olli Maatta and Zach Whitecloud, but this sets up a 2026/27 season where we could see even more deals made.
Sure, the team still don't have their franchise cornerstone forward that can take them from good to elite in the years to come, but with so many assets, it's easy to see why fans have become a lot more optimistic during the tenure of Conroy as General Manager.
