The 2026/27 regular season isn't one that comes with great expectations for the Calgary Flames, but if things are handled correctly both by the front office and the coaching staff, it could go a long way in building the future of the franchise.
What that means is that from here on out, every single player should be being evaluated for a future spot in the franchise, and with the future set to arrive early in 2027 before opening a new arena, there are players gunning for each and every spot on the current roster.
Building for that future begins again with the start of training camp, and with just one more season before the future arrives, we take a look at five players that need to have a standout training camp with the most to prove to their peers, the coaching staff or the fan base.
5. Samuel Honzek
To the team, Samuel Honzek has proved himself in the last two Flames training camps, but unfortunately, his seasons have both been cut short due to injury with just 18 games played a year ago, and in 2026/27, he's going to need to prove to everyone that he can impress over a consistent stretch, not just for a few games to start the season.
As mentioned though, Honzek has been a clear standout in back-to-back Flames training camps, and after putting on 15 pounds of muscle a year ago, he should be even better in the upcoming camp as he looks to solidify himself in the Flames forward core.
In those 18 games last season, Honzek posted 2 goals and 4 points and quickly showed that he's a very capable two-way player, and in 2026/27, he has the opportunity to cement himself as a middle-six forward over a long-stretch in Calgary.
