There wasn't a lot of good that happened when the Flames went to Abbotsford to face the Vancouver Canucks in their fourth preseason game. Ivan Prosvetov played the full game and while he did give up three, two of them were off either a turnover or poor in zone coverage.
Even elite goalies have trouble with those kind of shots. At the end of the second period he made a series of desperation saves to keep the score 3-1 heading into the third.
On the other hand something I noticed in his game is a little troubling. He has a tendency to slide a little too far to his right when moving that way. That's what happened on the goal I'm sure he wants back (3:09 in the video).
It's a slight movement but it's enough, when he drops into the butterfly his left skate digs into the ice a little more than the right. It wasn't the only time it happened in the game, and National Hockey League players will notice and will exploit it.
Calgary Flames competition for backup goaltender is surprisingly exciting
He did keep the Flames in the game though as the offense struggled against the pressure the Canucks were applying from the start of the game. It was hard to pick out a player who stood out from the rest. Connor Zary did score the only goal for the Flames on a bouncer from the point from Joel Farabee, deflected off Martin Pospisil and batted out the air by Zary and past Thatcher Demko.
Flames head coach Ryan Huska said after the game about Prosvetov's play "I thought he was solid all game." He also said that he was happy with the performances of Sam Morton and Dryden Hunt, saying those two matched the compete level that the Canucks.
It wasn't the strongest group that went to Abbotsford, with Connor Zary, Joel Farabee, Martin Pospisil the only forwards who played significant time with the Flames last season making the trip. On the defensive side Jake Bean, Daniil Miromanov, and Joel Hanley.
Half way through preseason and the answer to who will backup Dustin Wolf hasn't been answered. I would expect Devin Cooley to get another game to show Flames brass that he is the option going forward.
