Four Takeaways From the Calgary Flames Shootout Loss to the Seattle Kraken

4. Devin Cooley Could be a Top Trade Piece at the Deadline

Last season, Devin Cooley broke out with a career year, and after just six appearances in the NHL before arriving in Calgary, the 29-year-old showed he can be a good, if not great goaltender at the highest level. Still, he remains behind Dustin Wolf who is the clear starter going forward, but as a tandem, they're one of the best duos heading into the 2026/27 season.

However, this isn't a Flames team that wants to win many games this season, and as a result, they should be taking on interest in any player that isn't part of the long-term plans, and that includes Cooley.

Through two games this pre-season, the veteran goalie hasn't been perfect, but is showing flashes of what we saw in the regular season, and if this keeps up over the coming months, the Flames need to be seriously gauging interest in him.

3. Chase Harrington Will Be a Long-Term Bottom-Six Piece

The Calgary Flames had five picks in the first two rounds of the 2026 NHL Draft, and right now, all five of them are showing potential as future NHLers with the organization. Carson Carels has the most upside while Alan Shaikhlislamov is tearing it up in Russia, but in Chase Harrington, the Flames may have a very valuable asset.

Sure, he's not going to be a consistent 25+ goal scorer in the NHL, but throughout the pre-season, his shot has proven hard to pick up, and on Thursday, he showed everyone the true strength of his game.

While he was all over the ice, it was a (very, very clean) hit on Mackie Samoskevich that drew the ire of the Kraken, and as a result, a full NHL roster spent the rest of the game trying to get back at the 18-year-old. Clearly, that doesn't bother Harrington too much, and while he's got plenty of developing to do, what he showed us in this game is that he could be a bottom-six specialist, and a very good one in Calgary for years to come.
