Zach Whitecloud to the Toronto Maple Leafs
Zach Whitecloud has been a player that many expected to be dealt at least before the 2027 trade deadline, but if teams get aggressive in wanting to acquire the cheap, veteran blue liner, there could be a deal to be made on the Flames crowded blue line.
After the team acquired Jake Middleton, the math simply didn't work, with the team now having Kevin Bahl, Simon Nemec, Whitecloud, Zayne Parekh, Middleton, Yan Kuznetsov, Hunter Brzustewicz, Brayden Pachal and Joel Hanley all under contract, giving them nine players to fill seven spots. Moving Hanley and/or Pachal would be easy and could net the Flames a late, late round draft pick, but to get the best return, Whitecloud should be the player moved.
So, this trade proposal comes to us from Heavy Sports, with the Toronto Maple Leafs tabbed to land Whitecloud in exchange for several draft picks and replacement veteran.
Maple Leafs get: D Zach Whitecloud
Flames get: 2027 second-round pick, 2028 fourth-round pick, D Philippe Myers.
On paper, this would be a solid add for the Flames, as they would land another valuable asset in the second round along with a fourth-round pick a year later, but given the value of Whitecloud's contract, the team would expect more than this. On top of that, Myers is a 29-year-old with very little production across his career, and while the team could simply place him on waivers, adding another defenseman simply doesn't make sense for Calgary.
