The 2026 off-season will potentially go down as one of the most important in Calgary Flames history in the years to come, and while the team are set up to struggle in a big way this coming season, in the long-term, their moves could pay off in a big way.
Whether that's another fantastic draft class from Craig Conroy, a major swing on a former top pick in the draft or the trade of a key veteran, this team has made some important moves, and now, we'll take a look back on the summer that was and grade the Flames biggest moves.
Depth Signings/Re-Signings
While the Flames weren't too active in free agency at the NHL level, that doesn't mean that moves weren't made, as the team focused on adding depth to the organization at the American Hockey League level. The two standout re-signings for the Wranglers were Sam Morton and Rory Kerins, and while neither may ever get a sustained opportunity at the NHL level, both have shown they can dominate the AHL, and that's something that's certainly needed right now.
Beyond that, many of the moves were simple depth moves as the team signed the likes of Ben Jones, Michael Benning, Jake Livingstone and Andreus Englund, and while they aren't moves that will wow fans, they're solid additions for this team. Ultimately, the Wranglers needed depth after a tough 2025/26 season, and on top of these moves, the team adding the likes of Kirill Zarubin and presumably Andrew Basha among others who begin their professional careers in the AHL full-time, so there's some great moves here for the Flames organization as a whole.
