The Calgary Flames direction has clearly been set under General Manager Craig Conroy, and with four picks in the top-36 selections of the 2026 NHL Draft, this is a team capable of adding plenty of young talent to their future core.
However, that's not the only way the Flames can add young talent to their roster, as Conroy has repeatedly stated he would be open to adding young, NHL ready players with experience that are under 23-years-old. One of those players is Mason McTavish of the Anaheim Ducks, and given that he was a healthy scratch during the Stanley Cup Playoffs, it appears to be a matter of when, not if he's dealt by the Ducks.
Given that he's 23, plays centre and has 304 NHL games under his belt already, scoring 77 goals and 181 points in that time, he's the perfect fit for the Flames on paper. Now though, NHL Insider Anthony Di Marco has given an update on the Flames interest, and while they remain intrigued by McTavish, according to Di Marco, they don't have the assets that Anaheim are looking for.
"According to a team source, the Flames don’t feel like they have what the Ducks are looking for in exchange for McTavish; the same source said that Verbeek is looking to make 'hockey deals.'"Anthony Di Marco
Where is McTavish going to go? #Flames have checked in and PHI is keeping tabs on what's going on. But what is his value and what do the #Ducks want?

While some in the Flames organization would love to give up assets for McTavish, others are likely not wanting to overpay for a player that may not ever pan out as anything more than a steady 2C at the NHL level.
For now though, it doesn't appear that a deal is imminent, and given the other options out there for the Flames, an overpay here would clearly be a mistake, with the Ducks likely not interested in anything the Flames are willing to part ways with.
