Morgan Frost was a reasonable pickup for the Calgary Flames when they acquired him back in early 2025, but with all of that potential, he's failed to take the next step as a significant centre in the National Hockey League. That was, until the trade deadline in 2026 when Nazem Kadri was traded, with Frost taking over the role as Flames 1C, and finding immense success in the role.

On a line with Matvei Gridin and Matt Coronato, Frost tallied 9 goals and 14 points across 21 games played, giving some confidence that he could be the long-term 2C in Calgary. However, his contract is up after the upcoming 2026/27 campaign, and with no extension given yet, many have begun to wonder if he could be a trade asset for General Manager Craig Conroy this off-season.

Clearly, the Flames are in need of centres moving forward, but with the likes of Cole Reschny, Cullen Potter, Jonathan Castagna, Tyson Gross and immense draft capital in the 2026 NHL Draft, the team may see the position as one they can fill long-term with who they already have in house. If Frost had a deal in place, he likely wouldn't be traded, but given that he's got just one year remaining on his current contract, with his asking price potentially too high for the Flames, a trade could make sense.

Whether that's a deal to move up in the 2026 NHL Draft or it's one to get a younger prospect, only time will tell, but unless the Flames see Frost as a significant asset moving forward and a key piece of their future that they can lock down, don't be shocked to see him dealt before the 2026/27 season.
