The Calgary Flames came into the 2026 off-season needing to unload some players for future assets, with the likes of Morgan Frost, Joel Farabee, Yegor Sharangovich, Blake Coleman and Connor Zary all potential trade chips for the team.

However, there's a chance that the team could look to acquire an asset or two, and if it means clearing up the logjam that's been created in the Flames forward group, there's definitely deals that could make sense for Calgary. In his latest Summer Trade Watch piece, David Pagnotta has outlined the upcoming few months on the trade market, and in doing so, he linked the Flames to two veterans: Kirill Marchenko of the Columbus Blue Jackets and Mason Lohrei of the Boston Bruins.

Looking in at the current Flames roster, it doesn't make much sense for the team to target a winger, especially one that's wanting to leave Columbus to join a contender, but at 25-years-old, Marchenko could theoretically be a first-line, long-term piece in Calgary. Over the past two years, the former No. 49 overall pick has posted 58 goals and 141 points in 155 games played, and with the Flames needing high end skill alongside Matvei Gridin and Matt Coronato among others in the top-six, the fit certainly isn't the worst.

As for Lohrei, this has been a rumoured move since the 2026 trade deadline when there was seemingly a deal in place to send Rasmus Andersson to Boston, but without an extension from Andersson, things fell apart. In the past two years, the 25-year-old has 12 goals and 59 points from the blue line, and while it could have been a fit last year, given the additions of Simon Nemec and Carson Carels, the fit is just no longer there.

Ultimately, unless the Flames can move out several forward pieces without giving up much draft capital for Marchenko, the deal wouldn't work, and as for Lohrei, the fit is just not one that makes sense, so don't be expecting a deal with either team anytime soon.
