The Calgary Flames had a season full of massive decisions, and while they made the right ones in almost all situations, there was one moment that many fans wish they could take back; rescinding a trade that would have sent Jacob Markstrom to the New Jersey Devils. Now, talk is once again heating up with the Devils, and it appears as though all signs now point to the veteran goaltender having played his last game with the Flames.
According to recent reports, Jacob Markstrom has indicated to the Flames that he would like to play for a contender, and given New Jersey, Toronto, Colorado, Los Angeles and other potential contenders all have major needs in net, it's certainly a possibility.
At 34-years of age, it makes perfect sense that the veteran wants to chase a Stanley Cup, and given his performance to start the 2023-24 campaign, he showed that he's still got the talent to be an elite goaltender in the NHL. However, Markstrom still does have a no-movement clause, so while he wants out, there's still a chance that he could turn down a move if the contending team looking to acquire him isn't right.
The NHL Draft is right around the corner, and the Flames currently hold the No. 9 overall draft pick, and with the team reportedly looking to the future, Markstrom could net them a high draft pick, especially if a bidding war ensues for the veteran. Ultimately, it's been coming for quite some time, and now Markstrom officially wants out after the mishap at the trade deadline, so expect a move to come in the coming weeks and months.
