Top five moments of Tanev's Time with the Flames
Now that Chris Tanev has been traded to the Dallas Stars and we gave out our grading of the trade, we shift focus to the top five moments that Tanev had in his time with the C of Red.
The Shot Block Warrior
Chris Tanev was never afraid to put his body on the line to make his goaltender's life easier. Over his parts of four seasons, Tanev played in 259 games in the Red and Yellow blocking 566 shots. Blocking at a rate of 2.2 blocks per game, Tanev is currently second in league blocks this season sacrificing his body 171 times so far this season. But nothing was bigger than this, earlier this season when the Flames were in a 1-1 tie with the Vegas Golden Knights, Tanev made a huge block with his face to keep it a tie game in the middle of the third period. Tanev would be out for the rest of the game, but his sacrifice wasn't for nothing as the Flames took the victory 2-1 in Overtime.
Second Career Fight
A warrior more known for his shot-blocking stepped up for his first fight as a Flames (second in his NHL career) last season vs the New York. On February 6th, 2023 Tanev stepped up to the plate to fight Jacob Trouba who just laid out one of Tanev's teammates with an open-ice hit. Tanev did well to hold his own against the slightly younger and taller Trouba, with the fight seeming to spark a barnburner at Madison Square Garden that resulted in a 5-4 Overtime win for New York.
Four Point Game
On February 2nd, 2022 Chris Tanev not only had his most productive game as a Flame but in his entire career by picking up points on all four of the goals by the Flames in the 4-2 victory over the Arizona Coyotes. The defensemen picked up one goal and three assists in the win, with the goal being the eventual game-winner. That 2021-2022 season also saw Tanev score a career-high in points picking up six goals and 22 assists.
Huge hit in the Battle of Alberta
In a strange season with the return to hockey during the Pandemic, the Flames played in an all-Canadian division with no fans in attendance and squared off six times against the Edmonton Oilers. Tanev in his first season with the Flames laid out a huge hit on Oilers Kyle Turris.
If that game was played in front of a crowd, I bet the building would have gotten loud after that hit.
The Calgary Canucks
Heading into the 2020-2021 season the Flames made a free agent splash signing former Canucks goaltender Jacob Markstrom and then later teammate Chris Tanev. For this moment we head off the ice and over to social media where hockey fans started calling the Calgary Flames, the Calgary Canucks due in fact to the ex-Vancouver players that Calgary was snagging that offseason. To many people's surprise, Calgary already has a team named the Canucks. Along with replying to people's reactions on Twitter, the Calgary Cancks of the AJHL posted a tweet to help promote their club.
The Calgary Canucks were founded in 1971 (nine seasons before the Flames moved to Calgary) and named themselves after the only NHL club in Western Canada at the time. In recent years, the Canucks updated their team colours from Vancouver Green and Blue to better match the City of Calgary, switching to the Red and Yellow.
