Tuesday was just another quiet day in the NHL with the 2026 draft approaching, but in a matter of hours, there have been two incredibly talented young players moved. The first of which was Simon Nemec, who was acquired by the Calgary Flames in a trade involving three significant draft picks.

Not long after, GM Craig Conroy spoke to the media and revealed the plan to start Zayne Parekh on the left to accommodate both he and Nemec in the Flames top-four, signalling that right now, there's no plans to flip Nemec like some on social media have suggested. Obviously though, Nemec is an RFA, and if the Flames want to have him in their long-term plans, it means that they will have to ink him to a contract extension.

The Flames would love to get that done before the 2026 NHL Draft, and while it's unclear how urgent things will be from both parties, Nemec addressed the possibility of an extension shortly after the trade became official.

"They gave up a lot for me and I would like to stay as long as I can. If I look at the group it’s a good fit for me. (Conroy) told me to be in good shape for the big minutes and that’s obviously what you want. I will be ready for that. I didn’t ask for a trade but both sides kind of knew something had to happen."

Clearly there were issues in New Jersey, and while Nemec confirms he never requested a trade, it was clear how things were heading with the Devils, and given what the Flames gave up to acquire him, Nemec is grateful for that and could influence his long-term decision.

Ultimately, the Flames wouldn't do this deal unless they got a good sense that Nemec was open to being in Calgary for years to come, and while no deal is imminent, the early comments are a good sign for the Flames.
