For the past two off-seasons in a row, we've heard about positive developments from 2023 first-round pick Samuel Honzek, but unfortunately, he's struggled to cut out a full-time role in the NHL, whether that be due to injury or inconsistency.

While 2026/27 will be far from the 21-year-old's last opportunity in the NHL, given the spots open in the top-nine, Honzek could easily win himself a key spot in the lineup if he performs well in training camp and pre-season once more. Before being injured in 2025/26, Honzek was well on his way to earning an intriguing role with Mikael Backlund and Blake Coleman, and while the latter has been replaced, likely will Joel Farabee, that's the perfect line for Honzek to play on.

Still, there are several veterans like Jonathan Huberdeau, Ryan Strome and Yegor Sharangovich all looking for time in the middle-six, but if Honzek impresses in training camp, he could find himself in a huge role for Calgary next season.
