The Calgary Flames have had a quiet start to free agency, and while many expect them to continue being sellers after the Blake Coleman trade, there's opportunities for them to add to their roster as well.

Coming into the summer, there were options out there, and while the team showed interest in the likes of Mason McTavish and Olen Zellweger, they've made just one massive addition in defenseman Simon Nemec, a massive swing for General Manager Craig Conroy. Given their target age for a player, there aren't many available following a chaotic few weeks around the National Hockey League, but now, one that has constantly been linked to the organization has officially become available.

While reporting on the blockbuster offer sheet with Leo Carlsson, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman revealed more information about Shane Wright and his future in Seattle, with Friedman confirming through Wright's agent that he is now officially on the trade market.

"I can confirm that we have had positive conversations with GM Jason Botterill, and he has agreed to move Shane this summer to a team in need of a top young centre."

Wright may not come cheap given that he's a former No. 4 overall pick and a 22-year-old right-shot centre, something that fills the Flames need nicely, but given that on top of all that, he's a Flames division rival, the price would be even bigger for Conroy.

However, after a 44 point campaign in 2024/25, Wright took a step back this last season with just 12 goals and 27 points in 74 games, with it becoming abundantly clear that things aren't working in Seattle. Now, he's on the trade block, and while it's going to cost the Flames a top asset or two, given what a hole he fills in Calgary, the Flames may want to step up to the plate and swing big for the second time this summer.

Ultimately, it's very unlikely given that the Flames will want assets to potentially target multiple centres at the top of the loaded 2027 NHL Draft class, but if the price is Wright, the Flames need to make a deal happen for a potentially long-term piece.
