What Does the Future Hold for Hunter Brzustewicz With the Calgary Flames?

When the Calgary Flames traded Elias Lindholm to the Vancouver Canucks, the excitement revolved around the teams first-round pick (rightfully so, as Craig Conroy used the pick to land Matvei Gridin), but it was a much, much deeper package than that.

Most notably among that group was former Canucks third-round pick Hunter Brzustewicz, who was acquired by the team in the midst of a 13-goal, 92-point campaign with the Ontario Hockey League's Kitchener Rangers. Last year, he got his first true taste of action in the NHL, and given that he's still just 21-years-old, there's plenty of optimism for his future, especially among Calgary Flames fans.

However, there's a logjam on the Flames blue line, and as a result, his path to a full-time role in the league is blocked, and now, there are question marks over Hunter's future in Calgary.

Hunter Brzustewicz Not With the Main Group at Flames Training Camp

On Wednesday, the Flames announced their annual training camp rosters, and for the most part, there were very few surprises beyond 2026 second-round pick Chase Harrington making the top group full of NHL talent. The biggest shock in the other group? Defenseman Hunter Brzustewicz being placed with the mainly prospect, camp invites and AHL talent, and given the potential that he flashed a year ago, it's a shock to see the Flames prioritize the likes of Joel Hanley and Brayden Pachal over him.

This has raised questions about Brzustewicz' future with the Flames, and given that Zach Whitecloud has taken up the third-pairing, right-shot role, many believe he'll begin the 2026/27 with the Calgary Wranglers in the American Hockey League.

At 21-years-old, there's still time for Brzustewicz to develop and wait for his opportunity, and given that Whitecloud could draw immense trade interest moving forward, that chance could open up rather quickly. For now though, this isn't a good indication of Bru's standing within the organization, and if he were to run out of patience, that shouldn't come as too much of a surprise.

Could Hunter Brzustewicz be Trade Bait for the Calgary Flames?

Up front, the Flames have a logjam that will need to be sorted out soon, and on the blue line the situation remains the same, and with the likes of Brzustewicz, Carson Carels and Henry Mews all expected to push for roles on the blue line in the next 1-3 years, it leaves Craig Conroy with many, many decisions to make.

One of those decisions may just involve Brzustewicz, who could become trade bait for the organization, but given his lack of dominance at the pro-level thus far, it's unclear what his value around the league would be.

Ultimately, this is a situation that doesn't have to be resolved in the next six months, but with a major logjam coming on the blue line, the team need to make their future plans clear, and right now, it's uncertain if No. 48 is a part of those plans.
