Three years ago, the Calgary Flames acquired Jonathan Huberdeau in the Matthew Tkachuk trade, and after he put up 115 points with the Panthers the season prior, Brad Treliving decided to mess with the Flames future and ink him to a long, expensive deal. Unfortunately, to the surprise of no one, the deal hasn't panned out well, as No. 10 has just 194 points in 291 games with Calgary, tallying 25 points in 50 games before being ruled out with injury in 2025/26.

As of right now, Huberdeau has five years remaining on his current deal paying him $10.5 million per season, and coming back from injury, nobody quite knows what he will be in the NHL this season and moving forward. As a result of this and the contract, there's no way for Huberdeau to be moved, and with young names like Matvei Gridin and Matt Coronato taking over, the hope is that he can become a solid middle-six forward in the NHL again.

Verdict: Move Huberdeau to the third line and hope he can rekindle his spark.

Olli Maatta

The Mackenzie Weegar trade came as a shock to many in Calgary this season, but after the team offered a solid prospect in Jonathan Castagna and three second-round picks in the upcoming 2026 NHL Draft. The veteran they got back in that deal was a struggling Olli Maatta, and after being very unproductive early in the season with the Mammoth, he turned into a star with the Flames, posting 2 goals and 14 points across 21 games played.

On top of that, he filled a need on the left side of the Flames defence, and with both Yan Kuznetsov and Kevin Bahl missing time at the end of the season, he became even more valuable to the blue line. However, the team have the likes of Joel Hanley and Abram Wiebe under contract, and if they truly want to prioritize the blue line of the future, giving a young name like Wiebe extended time would make sense.

Ultimately though, a veteran presence is needed, and given Maatta's production this past season, they could cash in now or wait until the trade deadline, with Craig Conroy likely having a plan for the 31-year old.

Verdict: Trade him if the value is right, if not hold onto him until the trade deadline.
