Back in the 2023 NHL Draft, the Calgary Flames used a second-round pick on Etienne Morin, and this past season, he got his first extended shot at the professional level with the Calgary Wranglers. While his production doesn't stand out just yet (1 goal, 7 points in 42 games played), Morin has the size and the skill to be a very effective player at the highest level.

Last season, we saw Yan Kuznetsov make his mark at the NHL level, and when the team (likely) deal Olli Maatta for future assets, there's a spot on the left-side in Calgary that's going to open up for a younger player. Morin's physicality is something that already plays well at the NHL level, and while it's no guarantee that the team trade Maatta or that he will be the one to replace him, he's a player that could take a huge leap in 2026/27, affording him an opportunity at the NHL level.

Owen Say

In 2025/26, the Calgary Flames had an almost flawless run with health in net, as it wasn't until Game 82 that neither Dustin Wolf nor Devin Cooley took to the ice, instead, it was the debut of Arsenii Sergeev, who came from the ECHL and AHL earlier in the season. If either Cooley or Wolf go down, it's likely to be Sergeev that gets the first shot, but after showing immense potential in his first professional season in 2025/26, it could be Owen Say.

The 24-year old was signed as a college free agent, and in 19 games played, he posted an .889 save percentage along with a 3.36 GAA, but as the season went on, he continued to develop. Given his potential, the Flames are likely looking for a Say/Sergeev pairing in the AHL to start the season, and while it's ideal that the team have Cooley and Wolf going all season long, if a backup is needed, don't be shocked to see Say get an opportunity.
