No. 55 Overall: LW Adam Nemec, Sudbury (OHL)
As mentioned, this mock was made ahead of the Flames shock acquisition of Simon Nemec, but coincidentally, Wheeler has the Flames using their No. 55 overall selection on his brother, Adam Nemec of the Sudbury Wolves. While Nemec is a little undersize at 173 pounds, standing 6-foot-0, he's more than got the skill to make up for it, posting 14 goals and 35 points in his 31 games with the Wolves during his first OHL season.
There's plenty of speed to go along with Nemec's game, and while he's great in defensive zone coverage, the high level offensive skills just aren't quite there yet, which is why some have predicted a fall late into the second, and potentially even third round. However, the Flames need to bet on upside, and if Nemec improves the offensive zone play, he could be a very good middle-six winger at the next level if they are patient with him.
No. 51 Overall: C Egor Shilov, Victoriaville (QMJHL)
Right now, the Flames biggest need is a high end centre, and while teams likely aren't going to find them late in the second round, there's gems to be had, with Egor Shilov of the QMJHL's Victoriaville Tigres being the perfect example of a potential steal this year. Despite being a good size at 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, Shilov's skill is what separates him from the pack, with 32 goals and 82 points in 63 games played.
The problem with Shilov is his lack of speed, as he plays the game at a much slower pace in the QMJHL, and while he can develop that speed, there's going to be worry about whether or not he can do that at the next level.
Ultimately, Shilov is another big shot for the Flames to take down the middle, but with so much need for centre depth and potential stars, he's the best shot they can take here at No. 51 overall.
