With the option to protect just one goaltender, the decision here is the easiest one for the Calgary Flames to make, as Dustin Wolf not only represents the present of this team, but he's a critical part of a future where this team hope to return to Stanley Cup contention.

This past season was a down year for Wolf, but even in his worst year as a professional, Wolf posted an .899 save percentage along with a 2.99 GAA, and while he was outperformed by a career year from Devin Cooley, the fan favourite is still the most important goaltender in Calgary.

If Wolf sticks around for his entire career, he could end up as arguably the Flames greatest goaltender in franchise history, and simply put, you don't risk losing a player like this, so in the case of expansion, this would be a no-brainer for the Flames.
