The future is bright for the Flames after they made this selection. Coming in at #2 in Flame For Thought’s Prospect Ranking is center Sean Monahan. The Brampton native, was drafted by Calgary 6th-overall in the 2013 NHL Draft after posting 78 points in just 58 games last year with the Ottawa 67’s.
Turning 19 in October, Monahan signed a 3-year entry-level contract this off-season with Calgary, but his near future, is still undetermined.
Could Monahan spend his whole rookie season playing with Calgary in the NHL? Or should he not go over the 9-game-limit and save a year on his contract while returning to Ottawa in the OHL?
Monahan will compete in the top prospects tournament in Penticton and along with the Flames main camp in September. Whether or not the left-handed center will play in the NHL or not will be decided then.
On August 5, during the Canadian World Junior Classic evaluation camp scrimmage, Monahan recorded two goals and could play on the top line for Team Canada.
This guy is the real-deal and Flames’ fans should be excited. The future is bright with this forward. The top 3 centers in a few years will be Backlund, Monahan and Jankowski. You can’t say that won’t be one of the best in the whole NHL.
Via Hockey’s Future –
“Monahan isn’t the elite offensive talent that others in this list may be, but he most certainly has one of the most refined two-
way games. Monahan combines that two-way talent with strong leadership qualities. In many ways, he’s akin to Gabriel Landeskog. He will not dominate a game in any flashy way, but will control it behind the scenes and very quickly assume a leadership role on any of the teams that draft him.”
Obviously, Sven Baertschi will be ranked #1 in our prospect ranking. Did you agree with these rankings, disagree? Let us know in the comments section below!
