First, Johnny Gaudreau found himself set up by a gem of an assist from the New York Rangers defense, and then Mason Raymond was on-hand almost immediately after to put the Calgary Flames 2-1 up.
The Calgary Flames up until that point had been held scoreless by Antti Raanta in the Rangers net.
It was a fair reward for a grinding effort in the second period by the Calgary Flames; out-shooting their opposition ten to five and showing a physical poresence when required of them.
Gaudreau’s goal marks his eleventh of the season and continues his current point-scoring streak; whilst it’s not on the scale of Patrick Kane yet, it’s certainly on the up for the youngster in his sophomore year with the Calgary Flames.
A simple wrist shot after skating onto a puck that had no right to present itself, but did courtesy of a ‘failure to clear’ of epic proportions from New York.
Raymond, on the other hand was netting only his second of the year, but it was a goal that showed persistence. Upon receiving the pass from Michael Frolik, Raanta blocked his first shot, but he pounced on the rebound tipping it other the tender’s outstretched pad.
Two goals in no time at all and suddenly the Calgary Flames lead the game and are in a position to continue their home streak at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
Whether the Calgary Flames can go on to grind out the victory is anyone’s guess, but after putting themselves in the lead, they’re definitely in the driver’s seat.
