NEW YORK, NY - DECEMBER 15: Sergei Makarov

There’s less than a month and a half left until the season starts! With 42 days left, let’s take a look at a former Calgary Flames player with that number.

Since the start of August, we’re counting down the number of days left until the regular season starts up again! Everyday until the start of the season, we’ll be talking about a Calgary Flames player whose number correlates with how many days there are left.

Last time we talked about a guy who may have been outshined by his brother at times. And by “at times” I mean basically all the time. Yes, we’re talking about #44 Rob Niedermayer.

Today, there is only 42 days left until the season starts! And that’s not even including pre-season. So really there’s less than a month until we can watch some Flames hockey again. But with 42 days left, let’s take a look at #42 Sergei Makarov.

Stats with all NHL teams, regular season:

As we can see, Sergei Makarov didn’t spend a lot of time in the NHL, but his name sounds familiar for some reason… doesn’t it? Well, that’s because he had a long ice hockey career, but just not necessarily in the NHL.

Makarov spent quite a few years in the Soviet Union before coming to North America and joining the NHL.

Things Makarov has accomplished before his first NHL game at the ripe age of 31:

More from All-Time Lists

  • Two World Junior gold medals
  • Seven World Championship gold medals
  • One World Championship silver medal
  • One World Championship bronze medal
  • Two Olympic gold medals
  • One Olympic silver medal
  • Three Canada Cup medals (one gold, one silver, one bronze)
  • Awarded Order of the Red Banner of Labour (1984)
  • Nine-time Soviet Union leading scorer
  • Three-time Soviet Union player of the year

Fun fact: In one of his silver medals for the Olympics, it was in 1980 when he played for the USSR and they went up against the infamous American “Miracle on Ice” team. He was also part of the KLM line, along with Igor Larionov and Vladimir Krutov, which is, still until now, dubbed as one of the best lines to ever play hockey.

By the way, with NHL players not being able to go to the Olympics in 2018, could we possibly see a remake of Miracle on Ice?

Now, getting back to Makarov, he was drafted by the Calgary Flames in 1983, but he couldn’t actually play for the NHL until 1989 when the Soviet Union let him play for the NHL. That season, he had 24 goals and 86 points in 80 games. As an NHL rookie. He actually won the Calder trophy (rookie of the year trophy) that season which led to the changing of rules for the Calder trophy. He won it at the age of 31, and now there’s a new rule that only players under the age of 26 are eligible for the Calder (the Makarov rule).

Makarov will be turning 60 next year, so of course he has been retired for a while. In 2001, he was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame and just last year, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Sergei Makarov may not have a lot to show at an NHL level, but he definitely has a long and successful career that people will remember for years to come.
