Happy season-opener eve! With one day left until the season starts, let’s take a look at a former Calgary Flames player who wore the number one, Roman Turek.

Can you believe the season starts tomorrow? Where has the time even gone!? I feel like it was just yesterday that Dougie Hamilton was traded, breaking my heart. Let’s move on from that please or else I’ll start crying. With just one day until the season starts, let’s play “Where are they now?” with a former Calgary Flames player who wore the number one, Roman Turek.

Since leaving the Flames in 2004, the goaltender announced his retirement the following year following the lockout season. Turek then went back home to the Czech Republic to play with his former team before the NHL, HC Ceske Budejovice, in the Czech2 league, while also announcing his retirement from the NHL. He played with them for six years before officially retiring from playing hockey in 2010.

Following his first season back in Czech, HC Ceske Budejovice won the champion that year, Turek won the Czech2 Playoffs Best GAA (0.50), the Czech2 Playoffs Best SVS% (.978), and the team received a promotion from the Czech2 league to the Czech league.

In 2008, Turek again proved to be one of the best goaltenders in the league, winning a Czech Bronze Medal, Czech Extraliga Best GAA (2.14), Czech Extraliga Most Shutouts (6), Czech Extraliga Most Wins (29), Czech Extraliga Player of the Year, and Czech Extraliga Playoffs Best GAA (1.59).

In his final year playing with the team in 2010, he had the most shutouts in the league with four before calling it quits.

Turek didn’t take too long before getting back into the hockey game and returning to the team, in 2012, he became the goaltending coach for HC Ceske Budejovice. Until 2016, he was serving as the goaltending coach and the team president before also becoming an assistant coach during the 2015-16 season, but just for that season.

Since 2016-17, Turek continues to serve as both the goaltending coach and the team president and doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon.

That’s all for this year in “Where are they now?” since the season starts TOMORROW. See you all then!
