2019 NHL Draft: C Johnny Beecher

The most familiar name for the Flames on this list however is Johnny Beecher, whom the team acquired via waivers this past season, with Beecher playing 29 games for Calgary in 2025/26. He struggled in that time, tallying just 2 goals and 6 points, and while he was a worthwhile risk for the team as a former first-round pick, things just didn't pan out for him with the Flames.

Overall in his career, Beecher has 13 goals and 28 points in 165 games, and while hockey can be effected in ways without scoring, it's safe to say that Beecher has underperformed in the NHL. He's now an RFA heading into the off-season, and while he can be a solid fourth-liner, it's safe to say that the Flames will hope to land more potential when they pick at No. 30 this year.

2018 NHL Draft: C Joseph Veleno

Once upon a time, Joseph Veleno was seen as a top prospect in the NHL, and while he's showed flashes of being a good player, the 26-year-old is yet to live up to the expectations of a former first-round pick. In 2023/24 with Detroit, Veleno posted 12 goals and 28 points in 80 games played, but since then, he has a combined 10 goals and 22 points between Detroit, Chicago and Montreal.

Obviously, there's risk involved with any draft pick whether that be at No. 1 overall or late in the third round, but with the No. 30 pick, there's no doubting that NHL teams are hoping for much higher upside. The Flames will likely take a risk at No. 30 if they remain there, and while Veleno has had a solid career, Calgary need to swing big on a player that could pan out as a top-six player in the league.
