The Calgary Flames were eliminated from Stanley Cup Playoff contention well before the 2023-24 season came to an end, and if it wasn't clear before, it's now painfully obvious that a rebuild is on the way. While the team have some solid pieces for the future, they're a long way away from having a clear direction, meaning that the coming months will be absolutely pivotal to the future of the organization.
One player that is likely on the way out is goaltender Jacob Markstrom, who has reportedly made it clear to the Flames that he wants out this summer. Given the situation at the trade deadline, it's not surprising that talks with the New Jersey Devils have been reignited, but now, we've seen other teams enter the race for the veteran.
In his latest piece, Bruce Garrioch revealed Calgary's potential asking price, noting that the team are looking for a first-round pick (Ottawa hold picks No. 7 and No. 25), as well as a high-end prospect, of which the Senators have a surprising few that they would be willing to part ways with. Unlike Toronto and New Jersey however, the Senators playoff chances are not as likely heading into the 2024-25 season, and with Markstrom holding a full no-movement clause, it's unclear whether he would have interest in playing in Ottawa.
With the rumoured New Jersey interest, the Flames are targeting the No. 10 overall pick, and if Ottawa remain seriously interested, it's very likely that they will pursue the No. 7 overall pick. The situation is developing seemingly every day, and with the 2024 NHL Draft less than three weeks away, look for a resolution very, very soon, with the Ottawa Senators expected to play a major role in whatever happens with the Flames this summer.
