The Calgary Flames are at the beginning of a rebuild, but already the team have some pieces in place that give fans significant optimism for the future. In net, the team are set with Dustin Wolf, and on the blue line they have young names like Yan Kuznetsov, Zayne Parekh and Hunter Brzustewicz, all of whom played a key role with the team in 2025/26, and should do moving forward.

However, beyond Kevin Bahl and Kuznetsov, the pickings are rather slim on the Flames left side, especially if they consider moving Olli Maatta, as has been rumoured since he was acquired in the Mackenzie Weegar trade.

As a result, the team were rumoured to be interested in Buffalo's Bowen Byram a year ago, and reportedly, things could be heating up on that front for the Buffalo Sabres again in the summer of 2026. According to Darren Dreger, there are multiple teams exploring a trade with the Sabres involving Byram, and given the Flames recent interest, there could be a move there to be made.

So, what would a trade for Byram look like, and does it make sense for the Flames?
