The Calgary Flames sell-off is firmly underway ahead of Friday's trade deadline. Alternate captain MacKenzie Weegar has been dealt to the Utah Mammoth in exchange for defenseman Olli Maatta, prospect Jonathan Castagna, and three second round picks in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft.
As Flames fans know, the 32-year-old Weegar has struggled this season both offensively and defensively. He heads to Utah with only 21 points in 60 games and a -35 plus/minus rating. Utah, currently pushing for a playoff spot, is hoping a change of scenery helps the veteran defenseman return to form.
Coming the other way is 31-year-old defenseman Olli Maatta, who will provide a steady presence on a young Flames blueline. Maatta brings nearly 800 games of experience to Calgary, and was a part of the Pittsburgh Penguins' back-to-back Stanley Cup championships a decade ago.
He is not a direct replacement of Weegar, and serves as a step or two down. However, Maatta remains a perfectly servicable mid-pairing defenseman who will also likely see time on the Flames' penalty kill.
For Calgary, the real value of this trade lies in the future assets.
The Flames receive three 2026 second round picks, adding to this year's draft capital. In addition to Utah's own second round selection, Calgary receives picks originally belonging to the New York Rangers and Ottawa Senators. And given the way their seasons are turning out, one or both of these extra picks may arrive relatively early in the second round.
Also Alberta-bound is prospect Jonathan Castagna. The 20-year-old centre has 32 points in 29 games with Cornell University of the NCAA, adding to the Flames' growing prospect pool.
The absence of a top-pair defenseman in Weegar will be felt, and this trade makes an already struggling Calgary team weaker in the short-term. But the return is tidy work from general manager Craig Conroy, and signals that the Flames' front office is firmly committed to a rebuild.
Friday's Trade Deadline Could Bring More Moves
With the Weegar trade complete, attention now turns to what Calgary might do next, with several other Flames players continuing to appear in trade rumours. Veteran forwards Blake Coleman and Nazem Kadri have appeared on trade boards since the start of the season, and both would be valuable additions for contending teams looking to add offensive depth and playoff experience.
Newcomer Zach Whitecloud has been rumoured to be flipped to another team since arriving from Vegas in January's Rasmus Andersson deal. Fellow defenseman Joel Hanley has appeared in rumours as well, but would likely only return a modest late-round draft pick.
By dealing away both of the Flames' top defensemen in Weegar and Andersson for picks and prospects, Calgary's front office is focused on the future. As the deadline closes in, expect Craig Conroy to remain busy over the next 24 hours, with more names likely on the move.
