With Zach Whitecloud, Zayne Parekh and Hunter Brzustewicz in the NHL and the likes of Henry Mews waiting in the wings, the right side of the Calgary Flames defense appears to be set, at least for the near future. However, on the left side, the team are limited beyond Kevin Bahl and Yan Kuznetsov, with spots for the 2025/26 season definitely available despite prospects such as Abram Wiebe and Etienne Morin.

Thankfully, there is a very good solution in the form of Calgary native Olen Zellweger of the Anaheim Ducks, with the 22-year old scratched for all four of the Ducks Stanley Cup Playoffs games thus far. That comes on the back of his most successful regular season thus far as he appeared in 76 games while tallying 7 goals and 22 points, showing that he belongs in the NHL.

While he is fairly undersized for a blue liner at 5-foot-10, 193 pounds, but with a massive upside offensively and 164 games under his belt at 22-years of age, the future is incredibly bright for him. Unlike the Flames, the Ducks are set on the left side as well, so while it may cost a draft pick that some fans want Calgary to use, given their open spot on the left side, bringing in a young Calgary native with upside makes perfect sense.
