In the past 10 seasons, there have been just two superstars drafted at the No. 6 overall spot, and the first was Moritz Seider of the Detroit Red Wings, who has turned himself into a genuine Norris Trophy candidate over the past few seasons. Standing at 6-foot-2, 210 pounds with all of the skill needed to be a star, this pick was a no-brainer for Detroit, and after handing him a seven-year, $59.85 million deal, they showed just what they think of him as a top pairing blue liner.

In 2025/26, Seider posted 10 goals and 60 points in all 82 games played, and while Detroit fell short of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, he established himself as a top-five defenseman in the NHL. With five full seasons under his belt (82 games played every year), Seider has now posted 39 goals and 240 points, and at just 25-years of age, he'll be a top three defenseman in the league for years to come.

Matthew Tkachuk (2016)

The other superstar drafted at No. 6 overall is one very familiar to Calgary Flames fans, as he was their most recent pick at the position, with the team landing power forward Matthew Tkachuk back in 2016. Over his career, Tkachuk has managed to tally 670 points in 673 games played (382 in 431 games as a Flame), and given what he's done on the international stage as well, he's long been solidified as a superstar.

Since that time, he's gone on to be a two-time Stanley Cup winner with the Florida Panthers, and while the Flames would have loved for him to be around for a long, long time, moving on from him made sense for the Flames at the time. Simply put, if Calgary can land another player of this caliber in 2026, it will help their rebuild in a big way, but this time, they'd love to put the team around whoever it is to keep them long-term.
