Calgary Flames’ Sean Monahan Makes History As They Top Lightning
The Calgary Flames topped the Tampa Bay Lighting 3-2. Sean Monahan also made franchise history in the process.
The Calgary Flames and Tampa Bay Lightning met for the second time this season. The Flames were able to top the Lightning this time 3-2 to go 2-1-0 in their five-game road trip so far. The last two minutes of this game however was incredibly nerve-racking.
The Flames were up 3-1 and the Lightning had a powerplay and managed to score with 1:13 left of the game. And they pushed that entire last minute, but unfortunately for them, they came up short.
The Lightning opened up the scoring in the first period and it would remain 1-0 heading into the second period. And then thanks to a Mike like always, the Flames were tied 1-1. 1:21 later, Sean Monahan finally got his 100th goal.
Brian Elliott stopped 23 of 25 shots tonight and made some killer saves. Especially when he went into splits mode and made an incredible save.
The Flames are now 7-2-1 in their last 10 games, Elliott is now 6-1-1 in his last eight games, and the Flames are 5-1-1 in their last seven road games. Flames captain Mark Giordano also extends his point-streak to four games now and Johnny Gaudreau now has 11 points in his last 10 games. Safe to say that he’s finally starting to find his game again.
Dougie Hamilton had one goal and two assists tonight and continues to prove himself as extremely worthy for this team. Also Sportsnet got his picture wrong. Again. And put his older brother Freddie Hamilton. I’m pretty sure this is the third time they’ve done that this season.
But how could he not earn a star of the game when he does things like this?
But let’s talk about some career milestones tonight.
Monahan finally gets 100 and makes history in the process
Calgary Flames
Everybody and their mother knew that Monahan was one goal away from 100 goals. After about two weeks of not being able to get that 100th goal, he finally did it tonight. He became the youngest player in Calgary Flames franchise history to get to 100 goals. And he also became just the sixth youngest active player to reach 100 goals. The players ahead of him are: Steven Stamkos, Sidney Crosby, Jaromir Jagr, Alex Ovechkin, and Patrick Kane. However, Monahan did it in fewer games than Kane.
When you hear those other five players, you don’t really associate Sean Monahan with them, right? He is definitely part of some elite company and he may even be one of the franchise’s best players.
This is also Monahan’s fourth consecutive 20-goal season.
Michael Frolik had an assist tonight which now puts him at 300 career points now.
Matthew Tkachuk got another assist tonight and he’s proving to have a big impact for this team. He now has two goals and seven assists in his last seven games. At one point in the third period, he got a hard hit to the jaw by the shoulder of a Lightning player and was down on the ice for a while. If the Lightning hurt Tkachuk and the 3M line was split, it would have been almost as unforgivable as 2004.

Well, that’s all for now in this post-game recap. Let’s hope the Flames can continue their incredible road trip.
