Calgary Flames: Recapping the 2018 NHL Draft weekend
The Calgary Flames had quite the busy second day at the NHL Draft, but not because of the draft itself. Let’s see what went down.
I’m sad, guys. While the Calgary Flames had quite an uneventful first day at the NHL Draft for the first round, since they didn’t have a pick until the fourth-round, we got much more than we could have ever wanted. I know we asked for excitement and trades, but NOT LIKE THIS. Anyways, let’s recap what went down this weekend.
Day one – Round One
Nothing. This day was boring. Next.
Day two – Saturday, June 23rd
Chaos ensues and it all happened within a span of like 20 minutes. FINALLY, the Calgary Flames had a draft pick. They got to select at 105th overall for their first pick.
Round 4
105th overall – RW Martin Pospisil
The Flames selected Martin Pospisil with their first pick of the season. The Slovakian-born winger was playing for the Sioux City Musketeers in the USHL last season where he racked up 253 PIM in 49. That’s uh… that’s a lot. He was ejected from a game 14 times.
He was projected at going a little later, but nonetheless, the Flames selected him.
PS. We will have full details on profiles on each of the draft picks coming soon, so check on our site for those.
108th overall – LW Demetrios Koumontzis
Just three picks later, the Flames selected winger Demetrios Koumontzis. He was also projected at going later in the draft, but again, he went at 108. He was playing for Edina Highschool where he had 41 points in 24 games. At least he has a great name.
We have a trade to announce!
No, not that one. The Calgary Flames traded a pick next year to the Montreal Canadiens for their 122nd pick at this year’s draft. With that pick, they selected centerman Milos Roman. Fun fact: Roman was a player I was looking at and I was planning on doing a draft profile on him but opted out of it because “there’s no way he’ll still be available by the fourth round!” I love being wrong.
Roman spent his first season in the WHL last season with the Vancouver Giants after spending his whole life playing in Europe. He also played for Slovakia at the World Juniors this year where he had two goals in five games.
I guess the Flames wanted him that badly, huh?
We have another trade to announce
Yes, it’s this one that time, and yes, I’m still crying. Thanks for asking.

In a blockbuster trade and the most talked about thing in hockey today, the Calgary Flames traded Dougie Hamilton, Micheal Ferland, and prospect Adam Fox to the Carolina Hurricanes. In return, they got Noah Hanifin and Elias Lindholm.
Somewhat of a lopsided trade if you ask me and definitely not something Flames fans are happy about. More details about the trade here.
That’s a lot of action in like thirty minute, hey?
Round 6
Alright, we’ve calmed down a bit. I just feel bad for the kids drafted in this round. No Flames fans were even paying attention or seemed to care at this point.
167th overall – C Mathias Emilio Pettersen
Another fun name. In the sixth round, the Flames drafted centerman Mathias Emilio Pettersen. He also played in the USHL last season with the Muskegon Lumberjacks where he net 14 goals and 46 points in 60 games.
Round 7
Finally, this hectic day is almost over.
198th overall – C/LW Dmitri Zavgorodny
Another cool and long name? What are the Calgary Flames doing here?
In the seventh round, the Flames selected Dmitri Zavgorodny with their final pick this year. He was actually projected at going higher by any different prospect reports, with most of them picking him to go in the third round. It’s nice that he somewhat slipped under the radar and went down to the seventh round for the Flames to pick him up.
Zavgorodny played in his first season in the QMJHL this past year with the Rimouski Oceanic where he racked up 26 goals and 47 points in 62 games. He also played for Russia’s U18 team where he had one goal in five games at the tournament.

That wraps up the Flames at this year’s draft! I’m still not over the Dougie trade. Anybody else?
